A shocking revelation has emerged as an Ugandan referee Davis Wanyama has admitted to receiving a bribe in a FUFA Big League (2nd Division) match. This alarming confession raises serious concerns about integrity and fairness within Ugandan football.
Wanyama while appearing on NBS TV’s Emboozi Teba Nkadde revealed that they were given money by some Big League during the 2024/25 season.
“Last season in the Big League, we were given money by the home team, but we officiated the game fairly, they lost, and then they attacked us and took back their money.” Said Wanyama before adding,
“We were in Iganga and had to remain inside the stadium until 8pm, even though the game had ended at 6pm. We were being threatened because the home team had lost.”
Wanyama who is now a retired referee also narrated how someone offered them Shs7M during the contest between Gomba against Ssingo in the Masaza Cup.
“We went to the toilet to relieve ourselves, and someone from Gomba found us there and tried to offer a bribe of UGX 7 million for Gomba to lose the game against Ssingo.” He stated
The development comes at the time when the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has suspended several individuals in relations to match manipulation. It remains to be seen if FUFA will take further action in regards to Wanyama’s revelations.
