Aberdeen have signed Uganda Cranes defender Elvis Bwomono on a short term employment contract.
Bwomono, who can play at centre-back or right-back, will play for the Scottish side until the end of the season after short trial period to help with an injury crisis in defence.
Aberdeen have defenders Mats Knoester, Kristers Tobers, Tom McIntyre, and Nicky Devlin sidelined due to injuries as they seek to avoid the drop from the Scottish Premiership.
The move sees Bwomono reunite with Aberdeen manager Stephen Robinson who he worked with for 18 months at previous club St Mirren.
The Ugandan defender is expected to add versatility to Aberdeen’s backline.
“He’s quick, athletic and comfortable operating in a back three, at full-back and even in midfield when needed,” Robinson said.
“We brought him into Cormack Park this week to assess his fitness and sharpness, and he acquitted himself well, particularly in the bounce game [against Dundee] on Wednesday.”
Elvis Bwomono expressed his delight upon the move:
“I’m delighted to be here and looking forward to working with the manager again.
“I want to help the team as much as I can. Even in the short time I’ve been in, you can see the quality in the group. Training has been intense and, even in the bounce game, you could see the players taking on what the manager is asking for.
“We’ve got seven big games ahead and my focus is on doing everything I can to help the team finish the season as strongly as possible.”
Bwomono has not played since leaving IBV in January, whom he joined last summer after leaving St Mirren. He played 43 times for St Mirren, helping them to consecutive top-six finishes in the Premiership.
Bwomono was born in Uganda on 29th November 25 years ago but left for England at the age of three.
He had his youth career at QPR before joining Southend United as a 14 year old and left the club in 2021 before joining IBV.
