Vipers SC will face Kenyan champions Gor Mahia tomorrow for the first time since their quarter final meeting in the 2018 CECAFA Kagame Cup.
Gor Mahia fought from a goal down to edge Vipers 2-1 in a contested encounter on July 8th 2018 at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
Coming into the encounter Vipers had managed two 1-1 draws against Azam FC and Zanzibar’s JKU and beat Kator FC 3-0 to finish second in the Group A.
The Venoms were under the tutelage of Portuguese tactician Miguel Da Costa Duarte while Dylan Kerr was the Gor Mahia coach at the moment.
In fact, the quarterfinal defeat against Gor Mahia was Da Costa’s final game in charge of Vipers as he was relieved of his duties 11 days later.
Vipers kicked off the encounter on the strong note as captain Taddeo Lwanga grabbed the lead with a thunderbolt strike in the 15th minute.
The game went into the mandatory halftime break at 1-0 in favor of the Venoms but Gor Mahia rallied through strikers Jacques Tuyisenge and Francis Mustafa to emerge victorious.
Tuyisenge got the equalizer two minutes into the second half and Mustafa completed the comeback with a tap-in in the 73rd minute.
As Vipers got ejected, Gor Mahia finished as Bronze Winners after beating JKU in the third place playoff following a 2-0 defeat to Azam FC in semi final.
